Upon completion of required lecture courses, a 3-week take home project will be required for graduation. The student will incorporate all aspects of the curriculum and apply them to a real-world design project similar to that of a professional designer. The student will be required to space plan an entire house, including room layout, kitchen and bath design, furniture selection and placement, finish selection, flooring, wall coverings, window and bed treatments, and lighting. The project includes both a portfolio quality floor-plan, a color board, and a notebook documenting every worksheet, invoice, work order and purchase order for all materials used. The project has a budget cap and the student is required to propose the work within 5% of the budget. Prerequisite: Completion of General Classroom Hours.

Students will learn about the basic physical behavior of light and the historical development of light fixtures. Students will gain an understanding of how to use and control natural as well as man-made light, and be able to use lighting terminology correctly. After course completion, students will be able to analyze lighting situations and be familiar with solutions to many lighting challenges. Lighting resources and lighting costs are covered in catalogue studies and field trips. Prerequisite: None.

The student will learn how to properly measure, calculate, and estimate materials and la13 bor costs for window treatments, bed treatments, upholstery & case goods, wall covering, trims, moldings and mirrors, carpeting, and hard surface flooring. The student learns to distinguish between wholesale and retail prices as well as how to manage profit margins, freight costs, and sales tax. The student will practice generating basic business documents, including invoices, purchase orders, and work orders, all of which are essential to the sale and order of interior goods and furnishings. The student will learn to document the calculation of prices by the use of formula worksheets. These business practices are taught in conjunction with the principles of business: maintaining a profit, wholesale versus retail pricing, freight and delivery procedures, and their associated costs and charges. Prerequisite: None.

An understanding and development of drafting and space planning skills are central to the execution of all Interior Design projects. In this class the student is required to learn project management and presentation skills, from blueprint reading to basic drafting, including the use of templates and architectural scale. The student will produce finished portfolio quality drawings as well as a color board. An applied understanding of space planning, concept development, project requirements, and accessibility codes, coupled with drawing techniques prepares the student to execute large scale projects. Prerequisite: None.

The student will be immersed in the ancient Chinese philosophy known as Feng Shui, literally “wind and water”. Today’s design clients are eager to have these ancient principles of harmony and balance applied to their homes and offices as part of the Interior Design process. Students will learn about design techniques to maximize the energy and aura of an interior space. The purpose of this course is to provide the student with a working knowledge of Feng Shui in order to balance energy and create harmony within interior settings. Prerequisite: None.

Fundamental elements and principles of design apply to every field of visual expression from sculpture, painting, and architecture, to modern concepts in Interior Design. Students will learn to recognize, evaluate, and discuss the principles and elements of design at work in various interior settings. Students will learn to evaluate the effectiveness of basic design elements in specific instances, leading to a comprehensive analytical approach to design. These fundamental concepts are used by professional designers as the building blocks of every design project and are crucial to evaluating design problems and finding elegant solutions. Prerequisite: None.

Color Theory and its application are critical elements in the visual art of Interior Design. Students will gain a basic understanding of the physics and theory of color, as well as their impact on the overall design solution. Students will become familiar with the psychological implications of applying color, as well as the color themes used in various historical periods. A basic understanding of the physics, theory, and application of color are critical building blocks for the confident use of color at every level of Interior Design. Prerequisite: None.

Students will learn about the various architectural and furniture design motifs throughout world history. Course material includes learning about historical events and beliefs that influenced the development of different styles and tastes. Time periods studied include Antiquity, Middle-Ages, Italian / French / English Renaissance, through to Modern Times. This information is crucial to assist clients in the design field who will want reproduction furniture or use of antiques. The vocabulary and themes learned in this course are essential in communicating design needs within the industry. Prerequisite: None.

Students will learn to recognize and understand the basic weaves and natural fibers, the application and development of synthetic fibers, and the general history of textiles. Various painting, dyeing, and weaving techniques are experienced through class projects and field trips. Knowledge of textiles and their applications and limitations is helpful to the designer when designing an interior setting. Prerequisite: None.

Every good idea has to be sold before it can be implemented, and every good designer has to be visible before they can be chosen for the job. Therefore, the principles of sales and marketing are central to the success of the Interior Designer. In this class students are introduced to sales and marketing principles and techniques, from attracting and meeting customers and setting appointments, to making coherent and logical design presentations. Integral elements of personal presentation are: the rules of business etiquette, dressing for success, and establishing rapport with prospective clients. Each of these concepts is incorporated into the curriculum along with letters of agreement, professional resumes, and job interviewing techniques. Prerequisite: None.

Students will learn about movements in architecture from the 19th century to present, along with the subsequent development and changes in furniture styles. Students will be required to identify the works of major architects and designers of the 19th and 20th centuries. Students are required to be able to recognize and identify contemporary furnishings, including the architects and movements with which they are associated. An understanding and appreciation of contemporary furnishings completes the repertoire of historical styles from which the students may draw for inspiration in their own creative process and with which they must be familiar in order to properly manage contemporary interior projects.
